Dr. Harris serves as the mission's biologist, methodical in a way that reads as reserved to people who don't know him well. He is the first crew member to log the Cydonia chamber's resonant frequency as something other than instrument noise.
He is also the first human being to make physical contact with the disc at the center of the chamber — a decision the rest of the mission spends a long time deciding how to feel about.
